What is Retinol?
Retinol is a topical treatment derived from vitamin A that stimulates skin to renew and “wake up.”
Retinol vs Retinoic Acid
Some examples of retinol are: ZO Retinol Skin Brightener, Wrinkle/Texture Repair, & Radical Night Repair
Examples of Retinoic Acid are: Refissa, Tretinoin & Retin-A
Retinol converts to retinoic acid which is the more active and potent form of the drug.
Retinol is used to treat, prevent and maintain dermal stabilization. Retinol can be used indefinitely, whereas retinoic acid should only be used for short periods then transition back to retinol.
You can think of Retinoic Acid like a 5 month long chemical peel at home.
There is typically better long-term tolerance with Retinol due to less side effects.
Skin stimulation involves:
activating epidermal and dermal cells
optimizing fibroblasts to increase new production of and repair damaged collagen (firmness), elastin (tightness) and glycosaminoglycan GAG (hydration)
upregulating angioblasts which improves circulation increasing oxygen and nutrient delivery to the cells
Restores normal and even color tone with blending action
Epidermal benefits of retinol:
Restores water, lipid and protein balance (skin’s barrier function)
Induces superficial exfoliation, promoting cell turnover and improving texture
Purges existing pigment to improve tone and complexion
Dermal benefits of retinol:
Stimulates fibroblasts (make collagen and elastin)
Upregulates GAG (hydrated cells)
Improves blood flow
Stops breakdown of collagen
Tips & Tricks to Survive Retinol:
Strengthen your skin
GSR – Get Skin Ready with Cleanse, Scrub & Tone
Daily Power – repair damage and make your skin strong!
Growth Factor – build new cells
Sunscreen – protect your skin from UVA, UVB and HEV
Start Slow and Grow
Bump it up
After 2 weeks of using retinol every other night, most of the redness and peeling should be subsiding
Increase use to every night – “push through!”
After 2 weeks of nightly retinol use, your skin should be stronger and healthier
After 2 months of nightly retinol use, its time to “bump it up!”
Get the next strength up of retinol and substitute it every other night x 2 weeks
After 2 weeks of alternating retinols, move your weaker retinol to AM routine and start using the stronger retinol every night.
After 2 weeks (or less) your skin will be tolerant and look even more amazing!
After 2 months, you can bump it up again, repeating these steps
When in Doubt
Add hydrating cream morning and night
Use exfoliating polish (scrub) on Monday, Wednesday and Friday
Add the secret “Polish Activator” on Monday and Friday – this will chemically detach the dead and flaking skin faster, revealing your brighter, newer skin and expediting the peeling process resulting in less down time for you!
